The endoplasmic reticulum operates to perform several general functions, including the assistance of protein folding and the shipping of synthesized proteins in cisternae. Secretory proteins, mainly glycoproteins, are transported across the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. The endoplasmic reticulum was visualized in the digital video sequence in this section with mEmerald, while farnesyl was tagged with mCherry.
mEmerald, which is one of many variants of Aequorea-based EGFP, exhibits excitation and emission peaks at wavelengths of 487 and 509 nanometers, respectively. mCherry is one of the original mFruit series of fluorescent proteins developed using a directed evolution approach with mRFP1. The peak excitation of mCherry occurs at 587 nanometers and peak emission is at 610 nanometers.
