Rat Rectum Tissue

The digital image presented in this section is a three-dimensional reconstruction of rat rectum tissue stained with Alexa Fluor 488 (wheat germ agglutinin; highlighting lectins), Alexa Fluor 568 (phalloidin; labeling actin filaments), and SYTOX Green (nuclei). The rectum temporarily stores feces before they are expelled from the body. It is the short, terminal section of the colon between the sigmoid flexure (a portion of the descending colon) and the anal canal.
